Month of June is the celebration of Filipino Heritage Month in Canada from coast to coast to coast. Motion 155 authored by MP Salma Zahid of Scarborough Ontario, co-authored by MP Anthony Housefather of Mont Royal Riding in Montreal, was unanimously approved by the House of Commons in recognition of the growing to a million Filipinos contribution to Canada today.  Hardworking and responsible service working people, creative and resourceful in finding means to fit the life totally different from what used to be, coming from tropical country. Flexibility and resilience in nature is what make the people excel in adapting to the new place chosen to live with. With great expectation, as a safe and humane country, thinking of opportunities for somebody with positive outlook and skills to share and dream progress in life. Educated and well trained Filipinos adapting the life here in the North can’t be denied its part to revitalized economy here in Canada as well as in the land of origin.

This year commemoration is more meaningful among Filipino Canadian. Two women made history as elected government leader to join the politics. The first women to make it to the House of Common elected as Member of the Parliament Ms. RECHIE VALDEZ of  Mississauga—Streetsville. Ontario. Another one from local City Councilor of Montreal.  Ms. Stephanie Valenzuela of Darlington District, – Cote Des Neiges – Notre Dame De Grace (CDN-NDG).  Stephanie Valenzuela is the first Filipino to be elected as City Official. Although there were other Filipino-Canadian elected in some other provinces, in Montreal many had attempted but only one this time had made it.

June 9, 2022, was the annual flag raising schedule in Ottawa.  Despite the rain the event push through which was attended by many MPs from different provinces who were attending meeting at the parliament. The Parliament Friendship Group of Ottawa organized the event lead by Kevin Lamoureux.  Annually, the Filipino community in Ottawa conducts flag raising commemorating the Philippines Independence Day. This year is the 124th year and the 3rd year of celebrating Filipino Heritage Month.  The event was graced by the presence of the Philippine Ambassador to Canada, Hon. Rodolfo Robles accompanied by some of His Consul Generals and staff. Among those who gave inspiring  messages  from the guest were the Member of the Parliament Ahmed Hussen, Minister of Diversity, Inclusion and Youth of Canada  MP Sean Fraser, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship,  MP  Dan Mazier, Dauphin – Swan River – Neepawa,  MP Leah Gazan Winnipeg Centre, MP Sonia Sidhu, Brampton South, MP Peter Fonseca, Mississauga, MP Wilson Miao, Richmond Centre, MP John Aldag, Cloverdale – Langley City, MP Larry Maguire, Brandon-Souris, Manitoba, Senator Yonah Martin, Wife of the late Senator Tobias Enverga, Mrs. Rosemer Enverga and few of the Filipino organization leaders and representative in Ottawa, The Youth student Ambassadors  participants from different provinces  who are having exposure at the parliament were there too.

Despite the rain pouring, the program continue under the one tent installed in front of the Parliament building,  which was closed during this time for renovation.  The program won’t be finished without the sharing of talented young Filipino Canadian Julia a local singer sing “Isang Lahi”. After all the guest delivery of messages, one big Flag was carefully unfurled by attendees of the flag raising at the front ground of the Parliament Hill with the song of “Ako ay Pilipino”. A very emotional moment for Filipino Canadian’s love for the country of origin.

Ms. Rechie Valdez of Ontario and Ms. Stephanie Valenzuela of Montreal spoke loudly of representing the voice of Filipino and fellow Filipino Canadians.  A very inspiring words something to look forward from these two ladies.
